We love cooking chicken in our slow cookers because chicken is such a versatile meat. From chicken breasts (white meat) to chicken thighs, legs or wings (dark meat) they all can come out super tasty when cooked right in the slow cooker.
Dark meat chicken cooks great in the slow cooker because the meat is usually a little higher in fat and has more connective tissues that break down nicely in the moist hot cooking environment that happens in a Crock-Pot.
White meat chicken however does have a tendency to dry out or get a weird texture that puts some home cooks off. But we have some great tips for cooking chicken breasts in the slow cooker that will ensure moist white meat chicken that tastes amazing!
4 Tips for Cooking Moist Chicken Breasts In The Crock-Pot:
- Make sure there is added cooking liquid in the slow cooker – Water, broth, sauce or gravy all help to make ensure your chicken comes out moist.
- Add a little fat – If you are cooking boneless skinless chicken breasts or tenderloins there will be very little fat in the meat, and fat, when cooked and melted helps keep your chicken moist. Add a 1 to 2 tablespoons of butter, olive oil, coconut oil, or your favorite cooking oil to the slow cooker to help trap in the moisture in the meat when cooking lean chicken meat.
- Don’t overcook it – Always cook any chicken recipe for the cooking time denoted in a recipe. If a cooking time range is given (5 to 6 hours on LOW for example) cook for the lowest cooking time given (in this case 5 hours). Check your chicken recipe and only cook longer if the chicken is not done.
- Use the WARM setting on your slow cooker for only 1 to 2 hours – After your chicken is cooked many slow cookers will automatically switch the temperature setting to WARM to keep things warm until you are ready to serve. This is a great feature that most programmable slow cookers have, however you don’t want to keep your chicken on the WARM setting for more than 1 to hours or it may dry out.
Save Money On Chicken
To save money on chicken we suggest that you buy in bulk. Keep track of prices of chicken and when the chicken goes on sale stock-up and freeze it. I keep a price book in a Google Sheet so that I can access it from both my desktop and cell phone. So when I spot a sale or manager markdown while shopping I can check to see if this is a good price.
When I find a good deal I purchase 10 or more pounds. Then, when I get home I use my FoodSaver to freeze up recipe sized portions and pop those into the freezer.
And then lastly bulk foods stores like Costco and Sam’s Club can have some great prices too. We live about 2 1/2 hours from either of these stores but do have a membership for Sam’s Club where we go about once a month when the weather is good and stock up on all sorts of meats (including chicken).
