This recipe for Crock-Pot Baked Potatoes is so easy I am not sure why it needs a recipe. But a recipe we have done. Just 2 ingredients (and one is optional)
Crock-Pot Baked Potatoes
This recipe for baked potatoes done in your slow cooker is seriously so stinkin’ easy I am not even sure why it needs to be written into a “recipe”.
But write it I will because if you love yourself a good baked potato as a snack, a lunch or a side dish with your dinner from time to time this is the way to go.
I loaded up my potatoes in my new Casserole Crock-Pot because…well…I could.
Look at those spuds all lined up like little tin foil wrapped soldiers all in a row.
But if you don’t have a Casserole Crock-Pot that is OK because seriously you can make baked potatoes in any size crock-pot that will hold a potato.
The steps are super duper easy.
How To Easily Make Baked Potatoes In Your Slow Cooker:
- Get out a couple potatoes and give them a good scrubbing under some water to wash away the dirt (potatoes are tubers and are grown under the ground…so they are pretty dirty).
- Pat those taters off with a dry paper towel just to remove any excess water.
- Get out your aluminium foil (am I the only one that still calls it “tin foil”?) and cut off some square-ish sheets of foil.
- Lay your potato on the foil and if you like…give them a little sprinkle of salt. The salt is totally 100% optional. I like to salt my potatoes because I think it gives the potato skins just a little bit more flavor which tempts me to eat the potato skins more if they taste good.
- Wrap your potatoes up in that foil and place in the bottom of your slow cooker.
- No need to add any additional water or anything else. Just put the cover on and cook on LOW for a good 6-8 hours or HIGH for 3-4 hours.
- And when they are done you have beautifully cooked baked potatoes to eat any way you like.
I personally like a smidge of butter, a hefty dollop of sour cream and some freshly sliced green onion on mine.
But if cheese & bacon, chili and cheese, sour cream and bacon, butter, salt & pepper, ranch dressing or whatever topping floats your boat…go for it!
My 3 Top Reasons Why You Should Make Baked Potatoes In Your Slow Cooker:
- No heating up your oven (nice on hot summer days when you want a baked potato to go with your grilled chicken or fish).
- Fix it and forget it…it literally takes a few minutes to prep these potatoes and toss them in the slow cooker. Then you can walk away and go on with your busy day without worrying about it. I have cooked my potatoes 8-1o hours on low and they came out just fine.
- If you are throwing a party – your potatoes stay nice and hot in the slow cooker – you can serve them right from the pot! Plus see point #2 on saving you time on party day!

Love my baked potatoes with Salsa Ranch or Southwestern Ranch by Hidden Valley.
Oh that sounds good Tanya!
I don’t merciful, can just put potatoes in pot after they are washed, scrubbed and dried?
Yes you can just put them in the pot without wrapping them in foil.
Love all these great ideas. From now on, it is slow-cooked baked potatoes for me
This is the way to go!
I agree with you. It is too hot to turn on oven. Great idea my first try at crock pot baked potatoes!!!!!!
Baked potatoes in the slow cooker is the way to go!
Should the potatoes be in one layer or can I pile them in?
I was wondering the same thing.
what is the best way to reheat after being in the frig for a few days??
I usually just pop in the microwave for a minute to reheat. Unwrap from foil of course before microwaving.
If you don’t have a microwave a toaster oven works too. I wouldn’t heat up the big oven just to rewarm a potato..but that is just me being frugal 🙂
My old ceramic crock pot cracked in two!!
Oh no!
Do you have to fill the crock, or can I just cook 2 potatoes?
Great question Jan!
You can cook as many potatoes as you like or that will fit in your slow cooker. I have a big family so I almost always cook several potatoes at once. But sometimes if I just want a couple for lunches during the week I will do 2 or 3.
I wash them and rub with bacon grease, salt, and salt. wrap with foil. Put in crockpot low for 6 to 8 hours. Depending on size. I made extra for potato and egg breakfast tacos. Hashbrowns, etc.
Oh man Barbara…my husband is going to FLIP when I tell him about your bacon grease wrapped baked potatoes!
I didn’t see an answer to the previous question on this so I”m sorry if this is a repeat. Do the potatoes have to be in a single layer in the crockpot?
No they don’t. If you are doing them in a casserole crock-pot (the rectangular one) you won’t be able to do multiple layers. But in a regular round or oval slow cooker they are perfectly fine stacked on top of each other.
I have made “Baked Potato Smorgasbord” for years – and put out several toppings:
Green onions or diced mild onions, ground beef, chili (from a can), crumbled bacon, graated cheese, diced celery, diced tomato, diced red peppers, antipasto, diced avacado, sliced black olives, fried mushrooms, sour cream, BUTTER, ranch dressing, mayo
It’s easy, do ahead, and always well received
We do that too Vi, set out all sorts of yummy toppings and have a baked potato party!
Sounds like our “Baked Potato Bar” that we had for our daughter’s wedding reception! We also gave the choice of pulled pork and chopped brisket to top them or on the side! A big hit, and easy!
That sounds amazing Mindi!
I want to bring them to a funeral luncheon and I have 15 potato’s and a big crock pot. Will the amount of potato’s change the cooking time needed?
You may need to cook a little bit longer Jennifer if cooking 15 potatoes. But it won’t be a huge difference in time.
Sounds perfect! Can you freeze them?
Yes you can easily freeze baked potatoes Dee. I just pop them into a gallon sized freezer bag and toss them in the freezer.
Can tgey be wrapped in parchment paper instead as aluminium foil is toxic?
Sure
I’m stumbled onto this idea a month ago, love it so much I’m doing a baked potato bar for Thanksgiving and having kids all bring their favorite topping. I’ll be doing a roaster full so we have leftovers and I love the idea of freezing them.
A baked potato bar for Thanksgiving sounds like a fantastic idea Bridget! For smaller gatherings a large slow cooker will work but if you are hosting a large group putting them in an electric roaster is fantastic.
Can you freeze them?
You can indeed!
Can you substitute sweet potatoes for russet potatoes?
Hi Sharon, you sure can bake sweet potatoes instead of russet potatoes using this method! The cooking time should be just about the same unless you are cooking extra large sweet potatoes!
What do you think about rubbing with vegetable oil before salting and wrapping?
Thanks for your question Sally, rubbing with oil would be great. Would help create a crispier skin I think.
