Once you taste this homemade ranch dressing mix you will never go back to store bought again! With no MSG or other scary chemicals this recipe is a snap!

DIY Ranch Dressing Mix
It’s been a while since we have done a Tip Tuesday post, but here we are with a new one and I hope if you have never taken the few minutes it takes to make your own homemade ranch dressing mix that you will now. It seriously takes less than 10 minutes and the flavor…just wow. You won’t go back to the store bought stuff again!
I love the convenience of having ranch dressing mix on hand for many recipes as well as being able to make my own ranch salad dressing but packaged mixes are full of sodium, MSG, and a bunch of ingredients I cannot even begin to pronounce. So making your own homemade ranch dressing mix is a great option so that you have it on hand to add a tangy zip to your dishes but when you make it yourself you know exactly what is inside it. And that brings peace of mind.
I like to store my ranch dressing mix in little glass jar and then whenever a recipe calls for a packet of Ranch Dressing mix I just scoop out 2 tablespoons and voilà I have yummy ranch goodness!
You can find all the ingredient you need for this recipe at your local grocery store in the spice & baking aisle. To save money you may consider buying the ingredients in bulk.

To make ranch dressing, what could I substitute the mayo for? I am highly allergic to soybean, and that is the main ingredient for mayo. Any suggestions?
You can sub out some Greek yogurt or there are mayo’s out there without soy. Hellmann’s Canola Cholesterol Free and I have a friend who also has a soy allergy and swears by it.
You could substitute plain yogurt, sour cream. You could also find a good recipe for home made mayonnaise and use a different oil than soy.
Where do I get dry buttermilk
Most grocery stores should have it either in the baking aisle or where you would find powdered milk
How long will the mix last when stored in an air-tight container?
Oh a good 6 months to a year easily Jean.
Heidi honestly I don’t know what I’d do without you!!! After the manly meatloaf I think my DH loves you more than me! I never have ranch dressing mix when I need it…like today when I’m crocking corn on the cob and always rub them with butter and ranch dressing mix. This will the last time that happens! Thank you so much!!!!
Awww Karen you are so sweet! Your comment just made my day!
I need help everytime I click on a recipe it takes me to a different one not the one I clicked on. What am I doing wrong ? I hope I can get back to this reply box
Hey Janet, I am not sure what may be causing that for you. I just went and clicked on 20 different links here on the blog and they all took me to the right recipes that they were supposed to. I wish I could offer more insight but I am at a loss as to what might be happening on your end.
I have NEVER seen “dry buttermilk powder” for sale a-n-y-w-h-e-r-e”. Name a normal, common, everyday grocery store, brick and mortar store not internet, that carries it. I dare you.
It is even hard to find regular powdered milk; and I’ve never seen buttermilk.
I promise you I have found powdered buttermilk powder at Albertsons, Smith’s (a Kroger chain) and at Walmart…those are really the only three grocery stores I have near me besides a small mom and pop grocery store that I never shop at. It is located in all three stores in the baking aisle near the powdered milk. I am not saying that you can find it everywhere but it is available and I purchase it. I usually buy a canister of it once a year and that lasts me pretty much all year for making this ranch dressing mix for our family plus using in other recipes that call for buttermilk.
We try really hard to make sure that the ingredients we use in our recipes are relatively easy to find. Since all three of us ladies live in small-ish towns in the mid-west we figure that if we can procure our ingredients at the grocery stores available to us (we don’t have regular access to fancy specialty stores like Whole Foods or Trader Joes) that MOST of our readers should be able to find those ingredients as well.
However, if you cannot find powdered buttermilk powder at your local grocery store, and your grocery store manager cannot order it for you then we have included a link to where you can purchase the exact brand of buttermilk powder I used in this recipe online.
Walmart in Athens, AL
I’m on restricted sodium diet. Any suggestions for substitutions, or have you tried this with less Salt and gotten acceptable results?
Hi Lovie, you can reduce the salt in this recipe no problem. You could even omit the salt and then add salt to taste on an as needed basis depending on how you are using it. I find that if I am adding it to a recipe I may not need to add any additional salt at all. But for a salad dressing or dip for veggies a little salt helps improve the flavor.
I can’t wait to try this as a coating for baked chicken. I’ve used store brand & I received praise for it. We have a saying here ‘homemade is best’ so I’ll definitely be trying it.
Let us know how your chicken coating comes out with the homemade ranch dressing mix. I know personally I find it to be wonderful tasting. But then again I have been using this mix for years!
Hi, the recipe says 2 TBLS equals 1 packet of store bought ranch dressing mix. On one of the “store bought” packets, it calls for 1 c. mayo and 1 c. milk to make dressing. So then 6 TBLS of your mix would need to be used for the 1 c. to 1 c. ratio? Not trying to be difficult, just confused. (its says use 1/3 c. mayo & milk for 2 TBLS) p.s. can’t wait to try, making it as we speak, just want to make sure I use it right!
Each packet of store bought stuff is going to have a different recipe for dressing. Because this recipe contains less salt and more herby flavor than store bought stuff I tend to use a bit more in my dressing. But if you are unsure…mix together 1 cup mayo and 1 cup milk and then add the dressing mix 1 or 2 tablespoons at a time, mix it and taste it. Add more until you get the flavor you are after.
