This lemonade chicken recipe makes a tart lemon flavored chicken. I was actually a bit surprised with the taste.

My family really loved this chicken recipe and it was so easy to make that it is one I will make over and over again.

I served the tangy chicken with white rice that I cooked on the stove-top with some nice green beans. And it just was a really nice dinner!

  2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine together the remaining ingredients and pour mixture over chicken.
  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours or until chicken is cooked through.

Recipe Notes

To prevent sticking and to make clean up easier you may want to spray your slow cooker insert with non-stick cooking spray or use a slow cooker liner.

Freezer Meal Instructions:

    1. Place all ingredients into a 1 gallon size zippered freezer bag OR FoodSaver bag.
    2. Place bag on flat surface and seal bag closed while pressing out as much excess air as possible OR use your FoodSaver sealing system to vacuum seal the bag closed.
    3. Label bag with date prepared, name of recipe, ingredients and cooking instructions.
    4. Lay bag flat in freezer and allow to freeze for several hours. At that point you can stand the bags upright in your freezer if desired.
    5. To thaw, remove bag from freezer and place on a plate in the refrigerator overnight OR place bag in a clean kitchen sink filled with cool water for several hours to allow the contents of the bag to partially thaw enough that the contents can easily be removed from the bag and placed in the slow cooker.
    6. Cook on LOW for 7 to 9 hours or on HIGH for 4 to 5 hours from the partially thawed state.

Made this tonight and it was great – has a mild sweet and sour flavor and yes, carmelized the chicken-oh so tender. I think next time I will make a second batch of lemonade mixture, thicken with a little corn starch and use as out sauce on the meal. A keeper!

I am interested in trying some of these freezer meals. How do you thaw them when you are ready to use them?

I just pull out the ziploc bag and then set it in the refrigerator. Allow it to thaw that way. I pull the bag out the night prior to cooking it.

I wish I knew what kind of vinegar to use. Maybe edit or update with what kind is needed

Recipe has been updated. You can use either white or apple cider vinegar.

Can you substitute lemon juice for the vinegar? I really dislike the taste of vinegar. Also is this a sweet tasting recipe? My family doesn’t care for sweet main dishes. They would rather leave that for dessert.

        Thanks,
        Marti

It tastes very tangy. You won’t taste the vinegar at all. You could probably add some BBQ sauce to tone it down, or not use as much lemonade. If your still unsure, you can just do the other 9 recipes. No one will blame you if you skip a recipe you think your family won’t like.

I am in Australia and I think that the lemonade you use is different to the one I am thinking about. could I use lemonade as in the clear bubbly one (sprite?) or should I look at maybe using lemon squash?

I would probably just adapt it with some fresh lemon juice.

You could certainly try something like sprite as well, but that may be easier to do non frozen. Sprite, coke and similar drinks make a great marinade. Not sure what lemon squash is, but that is not what you would be looking for.

My daughter is having a baby next week and i wanted to make some meals that could be frozen and taken out as needed. I found your site and love the recipes. I put everything in a slow cooker bag (used for easy clean up of the crock) and then bagged it in a hefty gallon size freezer bag. The recipe/instructions were slipped into a snack size bag and placed between the two sacks. Hope it works for her. Will let you know.

I really don’t do much sugar. Do you think a frozen -no sugar- lemonade would work? Or would you think the sweeter in those would taste funny?

The sugar is part of the marinade. What you may want to do is try lemon juice and a few splashes of vinegar..and then add some BBQ sauce at the end.

this was a rather sweet recipe, so it may be more sweet then you like regardless.

Might want to add in how many servings this is. I don’t see it anywhere.

Sorry about that Emily, I have gone ahead and edited the recipe to reflect servings. We are in the process of reformatting our recipes and the serving information did not transfer over automatically and we are working on updating this bit of information on all of our recipes by hand.

Is there a way to make this more like a traditional lemon pepper chicken? I made it and it was delicious but its hard to place what it is. Its not lemon chicken, its not bbq chicken, its some unique hybrid all its own. Again good like it is…but was wondering how to make it more a lemon chicken to go over some pasta.

Hi Jay, this is a unique recipe for sure with a more pronounced lemonade flavor. Maybe give this Crock-Pot Lemon Chicken recipe a try instead? The photo shows chicken drumsticks but you can use other cuts of chicken in that recipe as well. I think that might be more of what you are looking for.
