Slow Cooker White Rice
I love to serve rice as a side dish, but I have a confession to make, I ALWAYS burn the rice when I make it on the stove top.
So I decided to give it a try in my slow cooker and boy was I pleasantly surprised that it came out fantastically perfect.
Ingredients Required:
- Dry White Rice – I like to use a medium grain white rice but this recipe works with any sort of white rice. From short grain sticky rice, jasmine rice, basmati rice, etc.
- Butter – Just a teaspoon to butter the sides of the slow cooker. And if you are vegetarian or vegan you can use any approved oil or butter substitute.
- Salt – Just a dash. Adding a little salt to the rice gives it just a little bit more flavor.
- Water – You can also use chicken broth which also adds a little flavor.
And that my friends is all you need to make perfectly cooked rice in your slow cooker.
Oh sure…you could cook your rice in a rice cooker…but that is just another appliance that ends up taking up space. And you know our philosophy…if you can make it in the crock-pot…why not!
To make this recipe it could not be any easier…rinse your rice in some water to remove the extra starch (totally optional) and then place the rice, water and salt in a buttered 3-quart crock-pot. Let it cook on low for a good 8 hours and give a quick fluff with a fork for perfect tender rice. How simple is that I ask you? No watching a pot of rice on the stove. No worries about the rice over cooking and sticking to your pan.
Give it a try, I promise you will love it!

How about with brown rice?
Hi Michelle, it would be the same process as white rice as for brown rice.
I love using brown rice instead of white for the nutritional value but
brown rice takes much longer to cook (stovetop or oven) so would the cooking time in a Crockpot require a lot of extra time?
I live in South Carolina so rice is pretty much a staple for our meals. I would love to throw in some brown rice in the morning and have it ready at mealtime; just not sure when to start the process.
Hi GrandmaJane, it really is just about the same cooking time for brown rice as it is for white rice. The low and slow method seems to allow the brown rice to absorb the liquid at a slower rate thus you don’t have to cook it much longer than if you were cooking white rice.
You can make instant rice / or instant mash potatoes so very easily……For rice follow the same recipe EXCEPT : No butter and no salt. When it is done cooking, let it cool and put it in your deyhydator and run it for 3/or4hours pull out your shelf and fluff up your rice. If it is not real dry to the touch keep drying it for several hours till it is bone dry. Now when you want some rice ,put 1 cup rice to 2 cups water or broth , BUTTER, and salt if you like. Put water and utter and
Bring to a boil and add rice . Cover with a lid and remove from heat . In 5 minutes you have instant rice. Bag the dry rice in vacuumed seal bags and vacuumed and store in your pantry.
Potatoes…….peal and dice your potatoes. You can make up a rather large amount. In a large put potatoes in pan and add cold water.
water in pan and bring to a boil . NO SALT NO BUTTER…When potatoes are just fork tender ( not mushy ) drain and spread out to dry and cool. Pot in a large book and start mashing. You may need to use a little of the potatoes water to help mash them. When mashed, place some on a dhydrrator tray and spread as thin as you can . Like with the rice check to see if they are every few hours. When dry run a fork,or you clean hand through the potatoes to break them up into flakes or powder. When your in a store take a picture of
The instructions. Cook according to the package and enjoy……….
Thanks for the tips Michele!
Gonna try this soooooon! Been asking forever if its possible … A cashier once said it was, and then she couldn’t explain bc of impatient person behind me in line. Thanks
Yes it really is possible to cook rice in the slow cooker! I hope you like the recipe Joetta!
Thank you for the tip! I will try it tonight with my slow cooker chickpea curry. I dislike coming home and waiting for rice to cook when my Slow cooker meal is ready. Yes I have 2 crock pots 😊
Will this also work without the oil/butter? Doc has put me on a low fat diet.
Thanks! 🙂
Hey Hank!
Yes you can use any oil or butter substitute. It’s just used to grease the sides of the crockpot so the rice doesn’t stick to it. Thanks for stopping by!
Can this recipe be doubled for more servings if a larger slow cooker is used?
This recipe hasn’t been tested like that, but I would think it would work! Just check on it because the time might differ.
I followed the recipe exactly and it was a disaster. It was burnt all around the edges and gummy in the middle. I am so disappointed.
I am so sorry this recipe did not work out for you Deborah. What type of rice did you use?
