Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen chicken legs?

No, for food safety and even cooking, always thaw your chicken completely before placing them in the slow cooker.

Why aren’t my chicken legs crispy?

Slow cookers create a moist environment. For crispy skin, I recommend broiling the chicken for 2-3 minutes after slow cooking.

Can I make this recipe ahead?

Yes! Prepare the spice rub and season the chicken up to 24 hours ahead. Store them in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook.

Can I use other parts of the chicken?

Yes, this slow cooker chicken drumsticks recipe works well with chicken thighs, quarters, or even chicken breasts (be sure to adjust the cooking time accordingly).

Equipment

  • 4 Quart Crock-Pot , 4.5 Quart, 5 Quart, 5.5 Quart or 6 Quart Crock-Pot
  • Instant Read Meat Thermometer (for food safety)
  • Small Mixing Bowl (for spice blend)
  • Liquid Measuring Cup
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Tongs (for handling chicken)

Ingredients

  • 2 Pounds Chicken Drumsticks (about 8)
  • 1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Onion Powder
  • ½ Teaspoon Freshly Ground Black Pepper
  • ½ Teaspoon Ground Paprika
  • ½ Teaspoon Italian Seasoning
  • ½ Teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • ½ Cup Bottled Barbecue Sauce
  • ¼ Cup Honey

Instructions

  • Place the chicken legs in a single layer at the bottom of the slow cooker.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the salt, black pepper, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning to create a spice rub. Sprinkle the seasoning evenly over the chicken legs.
  • Use tongs to turn the chicken legs, ensuring they are evenly coated with the seasoning.
  • Pour the BBQ sauce over the chicken legs. Use the tongs to coat the chicken evenly in the sauce.
  • Cover the slow cooker and cook for 4 hours on HIGH or 8 hours on LOW , or until the internal temperature of the chicken legs reaches 165°F when checked with a meat thermometer.
  • Serve these crockpot chicken legs with rice or alongside a side salad for a complete meal.

Optional Step For Extra Crispy Skin

  • For extra crispy chicken, preheat your oven's broiler. Remove the chicken from the slow cooker, brush them with additional BBQ sauce if desired, and place them on a baking sheet lined with foil. Position the baking sheet 6-8 inches from the broiler and broil them for 2-3 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.

Notes

Crock-Pot Freezer Meal Instructions:

  • Write instructions on freezer bags with a sharpie
  • Place fresh drumsticks in Ziploc freezer bag (I would suggest, not using slider, and I would use a brand name).
  • Mix the honey, BBQ sauce and spices in a bowl and then pour over the drumsticks.
  • Squish around the BBQ Sauce around the chicken.
  • Lay flat, and squeeze out as much water as possible.
  • Lay as flat as possible while freezing.
  • If you are doubling recipe/I would use 2 bags.
  • Be sure this is completely thawed before cooking/and squeeze all the sauce onto the chicken.

Hi gals….am doing this recipe now. It has been about 4 hours. I find that the sauce is not sticking to the chicken and no caralamizing is happening. It just looks like white meat in bowel of soup. Am I doing something wrong?

Your chicken may be letting off too much liquid. Try draining some off and see how it does.

That sounds like how I would do it. Skin on chicken is very unappetizing done in the Crock-Pot.
