Crock-Pot Homemade MaidRite Sandwiches
We have yummy recipe for you today from reader Julie Nowakowski for her homemade MaidRite sandwiches!
I have never had a MaidRite sandwich but it sound quite interesting. I am going to have to give this one a try and see how it turns out!

Ingredients Needed:
- Extra Lean Ground Beef – I like to use extra lean ground beef whenever possible in recipes to shave off some calories and fat. Plus I hate having to drain off all that extra grease. Most of the time I can totally skip that step in a recipe (the draining off the fat part) if I use extra lean ground beef.
- Low-Sodium Chicken Broth – You can use store bought chicken broth or if you have made your own Crock-Pot Chicken Broth you can use that too!
- Onion Soup Mix – In this recipe you will use 1 packet or envelope of dry onion soup mix. I prefer the Lipton brand but there are other brands available including store brand generic.
For Serving:
- Hamburger Buns or Rolls – If you are on a gluten free diet look for GF brands.
- Condiments – Set out the classics like ketchup and mustard or go a little “wild” and put out some BBQ sauce or Thousand Island dressing.
- Cheese – Just about any sliced cheese will work on these sandwiches. Sliced cheddar, Swiss, provolone or even good old fashioned American cheese will all work great.
- Extras – Take these sandwiches up a notch by topping with crumbled bacon, fried onion strings or caramelized onions. YUM! 😛
Directions:
- In a large skillet on the stove-top, cook and break up the ground beef until it is finely crumbled and browned.
- Drain off any excess cooking fat and add the meat to a 5 quart or larger slow cooker.
- Add chicken broth and packet of dry onion soup mix to the slow cooker and stir to combine.
- Cover and cook on HIGH for 4 to 5 hours or until most of the broth has been absorbed by the meat.

Crock-Pot Homemade MaidRite Sandwiches
I tried this recipe tonight and liked it. It has good flavor and is an easy recipe to fix.
I worked at the Maid Rite Sandwich Shop in Christopher Illinois in 1968-69. I can’t wait to try this to relive that wonderful sandwich. A true maid rite sandwich, however, was served only with sauted onions and mustard. We always cringed if someone asked for cheese or ketchup. LOL
Maid Rites are up there with White Castle Sliders. you can put cheese on it, but that isnt the right way!
I worked at the Maid-Rite in Colchester Illinois in 1957. Real Maid-Rites are made with ONLY salt and pepper (lots) and left to simmer in its own grease for a long time.
Salt and pepper and then more salt…. we always sauted onions off to the side and threw them on top. (My least favorite job was chopping those onions 10 lbs at a time.) Then our grill cook started mixing them together. It just depending on who was doing grill that night (day). Memories. Maid Rite in Christopher, IL is still there and still serving maid rites.
I worked at the Maid-Rite in Christopher, too! It was my first job when I was 16 even through summer/holiday breaks in college. The owner at the time would grind the meat fresh every few days. And yep, salt, pepper and plain water were all we cooked it in!
I worked at the Maid-Rite in Kewanee, Ill. It’s a franchise in Ill. and Iowa mainly. A true Maid-Rite is good ground beef in a kettle and enough water to cover simmer all day. or night. You mash the ground beef with an old fashion potato masher. I liked mine with cheese, onion slice and ketchup.

I agree Greenville Ohio does have the best I have them lot of other places but to and my family there is none like Greenville I am 66 yrs. old and the building is still there in the same place even when I was a kid the same place as today and same building. and still serving Maid Rites today if ever that way try them your love them

I don’t understand how all these different recipes can be called original Maid Rites…Usually a franchise has a standard recipe that all stores are required to follow so the product has the same taste and quality state or nation wide… Obviously, some of the stores choose to add their own special preferences…
I’m sorry but seeing as how I use to make these as a child. 45 years ago. It is wrong to post this as a MaidRite recipe. Cause this is not the recipe.
Mait Rites originated in Iowa, I believe. We have one of the original shops in our town. Beef is very leane, soak in Worchestershire all night, steam as much you can to prepare add a couple teaspoons of dry mustard, salt, lots of pepper. Serve with cheese, pickles, onion and mustard. There has never been a bottle of ketchup in the building!
I lived in Perry Iowa and there was a Made Rite next to the high school. It was the best. Since I moved south(along time ago)I have not eaten one. I have tried to make them but to no avail.
You know, I have an awesome recipe for White Castle Cheeseburger Pie. I tastes just like a White Castle. But I know it isn’t. Pretty much the same thing I guess with this recipe.
