Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use Other Types Of Beans In This Soup?

You can use just about any variety of dried beans in this recipe. Although great northern beans are standard for this recipe other beans will work too. I have made this soup with navy beans and pinto beans too and the soup comes out fantastic!

Can I Omit The Flour To Make This Soup Gluten-Free?

The all-purpose flour that is called for in this recipe is used as a thickener. So, if you are on a gluten-free diet you have a couple options to make this soup gluten-free such as…

– Use a gluten-free flour thickener such as cornstarch, tapioca flour or xanthan gum.
– Omit the thickener all-together and have a little bit runnier soup. Still tasty!
– Scoop out some of the beans and liquid and puree them in a blender, add the bean puree back into the slow cooker and stir. This will create a creamy broth that is slightly thickened.

Can I Use Canned Beans Instead Of Dried Beans?

Yes, if you would like to use canned beans instead of dried beans just omit the soaking of the dried beans overnight part of the recipe and decrease the cooking time down to about 4 hours. Since your canned beans are already cooked you just need to cook the soup long enough to cook the vegetables until they are tender.

Great question Sheri, since this was a reader submitted recipe I am not 100% sure. But I went ahead and edited the recipe to include adding the ham at the point I am 99.9% sure it should be added – before you start to cook it in the crock-pot.

Since this is a reader submitted recipe – WHO determined the NI?

Also – how large is each serving (cup wise?)

Hi Kay, great question! We ran this recipe through our nutritional information calculator. And a serving is 1/8th of the finished recipe. We do not measure out serving sizes into cups or ounces.

If I use canned beans, do I select 2 15 ounce cans or one?

    Thanks!

Hi Rachelle, this recipe has not been tested using cornstarch to thicken the soup but it may work. If you give it a try please let us know how it turned out for you!
